. the alternative energy market is not going to start working in the next two weeks. the obama economic policies aren't going to be working in the effect two weeks. it wasn't about style. it's about substance and obama not being able to stand on his own record. that record is not going to change between now and the next debate. martha: thank you for being with us today. bill: president obama telling the american people there is one pledge he will always keep. >> four years ago i said i'm not a perfect man and i'm no won't be a perfect president. that's probably a promise governor romney thinks i have kept. you i promised i would fight every single day for the american people and the middle class. i kept that promise. if you will vote for me, then i promise i will fight just as hard in a second term. bill: this won't be long. but give me four minutes. the romney campaign says he was a clear winner on substance. >> mitt romney may have scored some style point during this theatrical debate performance but he failed on the facts and his credibility didn't pass the bar the american people are looking

and more about enthusiasm. >>neil: so now the pressure will be on next week's vice presidential debate on the next presidential debate where a lot of president obama supporters will say you better come out swinging, you better do what ronald reagan did after a lackluster opening debate with mondale. i don't know whether he does it with aject -- a joke or a quick zinger at ronald reagan did but is it incumbent upon the president to get the forts back and get back in the game? >>guest: you would think so. how could we avoid the critique of the president's performance in that debate? as i said from left to right it has been very, very critical. it is hard to think of a debate except maybe the 1980 debate between reagan and carter where the gap between the incumbent and the challenger was so great, if this doesn't get the obama white house attention nothing will. you are right, they will come up with some lines or a joke or something but it is not as though romney is just going to sit back and do nothing between now and the next debate. my guess is based on his past practice, he already is

because it will take a long-term, not a long-term, up to a week to she in the presidents. we don't know yet what it will look like in the battleground states. the obama campaign is moving very quickly to make that trust argument against mitt romney through some of their surrogates in states like ohio and virginia and others. they don't want this to take off for mitt romney. >>trace: it could take a few days or a week to find out how it polls. i will give you exams of how it is polling. this is cbs and cbs says that 56 percent say their opinion of mitt romney has changed, and 63 percent say romney cares about their needs and problems. that is up 33 percent from before the debate. those are good numbers. >>guest: they sure you. one thing that the focus groups showed up last night, we have had a lot of undecided voters liked what they heard from mitt romney about the bipartisan record as governor of massachusetts. that is not something that gets on the trail. we don't see that in ads. we see a last independent voters like that. president obama has a reputation for just pushing through big

and they wanted. right now, the cbo says up to 20 million people will lose their insurance as obama care goes into effect next week. likewise, a study by mckenzie and company said 30% are anticipating dropping them from coverage. for those reasons, for the tax, for medicare, for this board, and for people losing their insurance, this is why the american people don't want obama care. it's why republicans said do not do this. and the republicans had a plan. they put a plan, a bipartisan plan. it was swept aside. i think something this big, this important, has to be done on a bipartisan basis. we have to have a president that can reach across the aisle and fashion legislation with input from both parties. >> governor romney said this has to be done with a bipartisan basis. this was a bipartisan idea, in fact, a republican idea. governor romney at the beginning of this debate wrote and said, what we did in massachusetts could be a model for the nation. and i agree that the democratic legislators in massachusetts might have given some advice to republicans in congress about how to cooperate. but t

a commanding performance. most americans believe he trounced president obama in their first showdown. more on that in a moment. first, some of the reactions. even as the dust was settling. >> a week ago, people were saying this was over. we've got a horse race. mitt romney, his performance was head and shoulders above anything we've ever seen him do before. >> mitt romney rose to the moment tonight. in a way, frankly, that surprised me. >> it looked like romney wanted to be there and president obama didn't want to be there. >> dan lothian is in denver. morning, dan. mr. obama can't be feeling very good this morning. >> reporter: good morning. well, look, as you just played out in those sound bites, it was a big night for governor romney. some have suggested it was a make or break debate for him. he certainly showed up to fight. and voters agree he got the win in a cnn or flash poll, 67% of the voters said he won the debate. 25% saying president obama won. how did he do it? he challenged the president, never backed down even as the president appeared not to want to push back until the secon

something once a week. on the serious side because it's really -- i think people will discounts what he says because it's biden. they'll say well, he's off on his own again. but from obama, you saw those quips he was tossing out. the stuff that you wish you had said, all the witty remarks and rebuttals that you never said at the dinner, but you remember on the way out. so he had all of these chances last night, which again shows he doesn't have a good game when it comes to being quick and effective on his feet, he's trying to make up for it. but what's going to happen in the second debate, it's going to be a town hall. that's different dynamic, how you interact with the audience. that's where, for example, bush did badly. bush won and clinton did really well. so that's going to be a challenge. romney is really good one on one. it will be different in a town hall for him. >> bret: we have the wit of the staircase sometimes here on the panel. when we leave the panel, man, why didn't i say that. >> i have the wit of the car every night. on the campaign trail for a couple of weeks, heually gave mt romney aop to compassia individuals on the campaign trail suffering because of the obama economy as he said that would do better under his tax plans and by not lit galling he will have a less of a chance of making that point because mitt romney seemed pretty compassionate last night. >> okay. so malpractice you see. john avlon had a jaw dropping moment. let's watch the moment and then we'ltalk. >> well, i don't have a $5 trillion tax cut. i don't have a tax cut of the scale you're talking about. my view is that we ought to provide tax relief to people in the middle class but i won't redees the share of taxes paid by high income people. >> jaw dropping because -- >> i mean, just surreal. the size of the etch-a-sketch. the audacity on taxes. which was unbelievable. i mean, almost as if mitt romney's not listening to the campaign rhetoric for five years. the core difnc candidates is about the tax cuts for the upper income bracket and 20% tax cut across the board. mitt romney never specified the deductions that he discusses and doesn't giv

think in this case, barak obama suffered from his own hubrus. he strolled in thinking he could phone it in. it reminded me several weeks ago we had national empty chair day. it looked like national empty podium day there yesterday for him. rather unfortunate. i think he's not going to take it for granted the next time. >> brian: what i saw interesting, for example, when you hear the president talk about tax breaks fort oil companies and for the rich and the corporate jet owners, as if they're the problem, i thought it was very interesting and a calculated way, mitt romney was able to spell out why they are not the problem and take the corporate oil -- excuse me, take the oil company tax breaks, put it in perspective and compare it to the green energy. a lot of people who do this for a living and hoping not to be vilified, which they were for the last 3 1/2 years, must have felt pretty good. >> yeah. romney was incredibly effective. he looked competent. he sounded confident. he was engaged. he was everything that barak obama was not. i think it was a reminder to people of just how di
